GM halted inflation pay raises for some workers.

The auto giant said pay increases for its 110,000 non-union, salaried workers will be based solely on merit from now on. Since the late 1940s, when the United Auto Workers won protection from inflation, GM’s salaried employes have received cost-of-living raises pegged to increases in the consumer price index. The change, affecting U.S. and Canadian salaried workers, is intended to boost productivity and cut costs. But it could anger some white-collar workers, who have already tried unsuccessfully to persuade colleagues to join the UAW.
