The Downey Unified School District Board of Trustees has unanimously approved guidelines for admitting children with AIDS that would allow a committee to judge each case individually before deciding where to place the child.

A child with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome who seeks admittance to the district must first provide written statements from his doctor and the county Health Department that state there is no risk to classmates. The request is then forwarded to a committee made up of the child’s parents, a teacher, a principal and the head nurse, who recommend the best placement for the child.

If the child is denied permission to attend regular classes because his physical condition is such that there is a likelihood of transmission, he would be placed in an alternative education program, such as home teaching or individual study.
