Douglas County, Nev., commissioners voted to change the name of the town of Stateline, at the California border, to “Lake Tahoe,” but some area residents said they will continue to oppose the name-change. The commissioners had originally planned to merge the towns of Zephyr Cove and Stateline, and call the combined city “Lake Tahoe.” But the people of Zephyr Cove objected so strongly that it was decided to confine the change to Stateline. Even so, the change is far from final. Postal and other federal authorities must make their own decisions in the matter--and while federal approval is usually swift and sure, this case may be different: Opponents of the new name said they will ask the federal government to disapprove, on grounds that the name “Lake Tahoe” should be applied only to the lake itself.
