Brea : City Puts Freeze on Downtown Development

Share

Developers with plans for Brea’s downtown--known as Old Brea--will have to put their projects on hold while the city decides what it wants to do with the area.

City Council members this week adopted an urgent ordinance freezing development applications for 45 days in the downtown study area. There are six projects affected by the application moratorium, Development Services Director Bill Kelly said Friday.

The area under study contains some commercial buildings, some single-family homes, some older apartments and new condominiums, Kelly said. Officials are considering expanding the commercial area, he said.

Until the study is completed, officials want to halt new projects that could conflict with zoning that eventually will be recommended by the study, Kelly said.

City officials could extend the 45-day moratorium but would first need to hold a public hearing.
