A faulty tank valve caused a toxic liquid chemical to leak in a USC laboratory, authorities said. A city Fire Department hazardous materials team was called to USC’s Hydrocarbon Institute to clean up the corrosive chemical, boron trifluoride, that had spilled from its tank, USC Security Sgt. Gary McDougall said. No one was injured in the campus accident. The spill was attributed to a faulty valve on the chemical’s holding tank, McDougall said. According to McDougall, the spill did not contaminate the laboratory, which will be safe for students and professors to resume work.
