Riverside Has a White Surprise

Share

Snow coated a large area of Riverside County early today, falling in some places where apparently no snow has been reported for nearly 40 years.

Light snow was reported in parts of the city of Riverside and heavier falls at Sunnymead, Moreno, Perris, March Air Force Base and Redlands.

“It was just like being back home in Indiana,” said Sue Amend of the City Hall Information Desk in Riverside. “I’ve been in Riverside 21 years and never seen anything like this here.”

The National Weather Service in Riverside said the snow fell mainly at altitudes of 1,500 feet and above. The temperature dropped to 36 in Riverside early today and to 33 in Sunnymead and East Highlands, near Redlands.

The Riverside Press Enterprise, digging into its archives, said the last snow to fall in the city of Riverside itself was in 1949, when 4 inches was recorded in the eastern part of the town.
