A man believed to be Nazi war criminal Walter Kutschmann, held responsible for murdering 2,000 Polish Jews during World War II, has been seized in Buenos Aires. He told his captors “the chase is over.”

A West German Embassy official said “we are certain” the man is Kutschmann. He had been using the name Pedro Ricardo Olmo.

Bonn sought Kutschmann’s extradition on war crimes charges pending before a tribunal in Berlin.

Kutschmann was chief of Gestapo Section Four in Drohobic, Poland, from July, 1941, until the spring of 1942. He is accused of taking part in at least five mass executions that resulted in the deaths of an unspecified number of Jews in Drohobic, and the deportation of at least 1,000 Jews who were sent to death elsewhere in Poland.
