Mental Health Group Holds First Outreach Event and Awards Program

The Los Angeles County Alliance for the Mentally Ill (LAC-AMI) will host its first outreach event and present awards to supporters at “A Celebration of Friends for Mental Health” on Sunday at the Palace, 1735 N. Vine in Hollywood.

Awards, honoring those who have helped through their efforts in the media to promote public awareness of mental health issues, will be presented to Sandy Hill of KCBS-TV for her reportage in “Beyond Shackles,” a series on the mental health system in Los Angeles County; Michael Jackson of KABC TalkRadio for interviews with Don Richardson, organizer of the LAC-AMI Countywide Coordinating Committee and first vice president of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill; and The Los Angeles Times for its continued efforts in covering mental health issues in the county. James D. Boswell, vice president, Employee and Public Relations, will accept for The Times.

The event, from noon to 4 p.m. will feature a no-host bar and buffet, music by singer Mel Carter and a theater performance. Families and friends of mentally ill persons are encouraged to attend to learn about self-help groups in the area. Representatives of LAC-AMI affiliates will be present to provide information.
