Specs Appeal If you like subtle-not-bold eye makeup, you might like subtle-not-bold eyeglasses as well. Choose frames that follow the shape of your face--square frames for square faces, round for round. The top should cover your eyebrows, the bottom should meet your cheekbones. And the color is most subtle when it matches your hair or is a shade lighter. Puffiness under the eyes can be camouflaged with lenses tinted pink or peach from the pupil down. Hooded lids look less so with lenses tinted pink or peach above the pupil.

These eye-wear ideas come from Christine Kunzelman of the Panache Appearance Studios, who cautions: “Paying for an eyeglass consultation is like paying for a makeup lesson. You’re buying one person’s opinion.” Kunzelman says she formed her own opinions during her 20 years in the personal-grooming business. “After a makeup lesson, my clients looked great--until they put on their glasses,” she says. “Then, all you could see was the frames.” She applies an eye makeup and provides eyeglass consultation for $36. An eyeglass consultation alone costs $18. She also carries a selection of frames at Panache Appearance Studios in Torrance.

The Joy of Blending If you make your own skin treatments, here are a few guidelines: Keep cleansers, moisturizers and masks made with kitchen ingredients in the refrigerator to prevent mold. And if you use a blender, keep it as clean as a laboratory test tube.

Skin-care expert Gloria Martel warns that the kitchen recipes most often published in magazines aren’t necessarily suited to every skin type. The only one she recommends for general use is raw egg. Use the white, lightly whipped, as a 15-minute mask for oily skin. Use the yolk, lightly whipped, as a 10-minute mask for dry skin. And “rinse with cool water, or the egg will cook,” Martel says. She custom-blends her own herb-based products at the Gloria Martel Salon in West Los Angeles. Lighting Up For other eye-catching effects, wear gold eye shadow on your lips or clear-colored lip balm on your cheekbones. This uncommon cosmetics advice comes from beauty and skin-care expert Rachel Perry. For gilded lips, she suggests applying a favorite lipstick and then blending more of the same shade with a bit of gold-color powder. Put the sparkling blend on your lips with your index finger.

Another suggestion: “Dab clear lip balm on your upper eyelids, and gold eye shadow over that.”

For a light-catching finishing touch, use lip balm without the gold shadow under your eyes, just above the cheekbones. Rachel Perry products are available at Mervyn’s, Sav-On and Longs.
