The City Council has hired a consultant, Telecommunications Management Corp., to evaluate Whittier’s cable TV company following complaints from residents about poor service. Council members agreed to pay Telecommunications $12,000 to evaluate Sammons Cable Co., which has had a franchise in Whittier since 1966.

Subscribers have complained in recent weeks about inability to get Sammons to respond to service calls, city officials said. At the same time, subscribers say it is difficult to reach the company by telephone and messages are rarely returned.

By law, any change in cable companies must be documented by a consultant company. A report by Telecommunications, which also is a consultant for the cities of Pico Rivera and Santa Fe Springs, is expected to be presented to the Whittier council by the end of December.
