Paramount has applied for a $300,000 state grant to refurbish its old City Hall building, which was constructed in the late 1920s.

The funds would be provided through the Historic Preservation Grant Program for rehabilitation projects. Such grants are awarded on a competitive basis. The city would have to contribute 10%, or $30,000, toward the project.

City employees moved from the old Spanish-style building at Paramount Boulevard and Jackson Street to the present City Hall in 1963. The old building now houses various retail stores near the central business district.

Officials of the state Parks and Recreation Department, which is expected to make a final decision sometime early next year, probably will visit the two-story building before that decision is made, said Patrick West, city human services director.
