Fifteen drug traffickers have died in a clash between rival Peruvian and Colombian gangs in a coca-growing region in northeastern Peru, police said Wednesday.

They said fighting broke out when the Colombians tried to take over a coca-leaf plantation region from Peruvians outside the town of Uchiza a week ago. Authorities reportedly learned of the clash after discovering corpses washed up in the Huallaga River valley.

The United States has committed $30 million to eradicating the coca crop in the Huallaga region, which supplies nearly half the raw material for the world’s cocaine.
