A 19-year-old Occidental College student was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. Los Angeles police said Margaret McCarten, a former resident of Aspen, Colo., was crossing York Boulevard at Armadale Street against a red light when she was struck by a car driven by Jerard Childs, 33, of Los Angeles. McCarten, an award-winning debater who was majoring in diplomacy and world affairs, died a few hours later at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. Childs, who was driving an unregistered automobile and had only an expired license in his possession, was booked on suspicion of drunk driving.
