Torrance : Service Grants Awarded

The City Council has awarded $15,000 in grants to seven community service organizations through its Nonprofit Agency Grant Program. The organizations selected and the amounts awarded are: South Bay Senior Services, $3,572; South Bay Free Clinic, $3,500; 1736 Family Crisis Center, $3,561; Volunteer Bureau, $1,000; Switzer Center, $1,512; YWCA, $931; and Salvation Army, $924.

The Human Resources Commission had originally recommended that the Pregnancy Counseling Center receive $3,992.50 and that the South Bay Youth Services get $3,992.50. But the City Council two weeks ago asked that the city staff reconsider the choices, and those two organizations were replaced with the South Bay Free Clinic, 1736 Family Crisis Center and the Salvation Army.

Parks and Recreation Director Gene Barnet had recommended that South Bay Free Clinic and 1736 House be considered because their long history of providing service to Torrance residents. He said the Police Department refers victims of domestic violence to 1736 House, and that the Torrance Youth Council supported the South Bay Free Clinic’s Safe Ride Program, which provides free rides to youths who have been drinking or youths left stranded by drivers who have been drinking.
