Charges of reverse discrimination have been lodged in an Alameda County Superior Court lawsuit on behalf of eight white members of an Oakland firefighting recruit class. A federal judge in San Francisco blocked the start of the class after the Oakland Black Firefighters’ Assn. filed a suit contending the class’s racial composition did not meet Oakland affirmative action goals, which call for a ratio of 47% black and 53% women on the city employee payroll. Several of the white firefighters have quit their jobs and feel “caught in the cross fire,” said attorney Michael Ciraolo, who filed the suit.
