A former San Francisco Bay Area labor official has been indicted for allegedly embezzling $13,000 from a union representing about 200,000 airline machinists, the U.S. Labor Department said. Armando Chavez, former secretary-treasurer of District Lodge 141 of the Machinists and Aerospace Workers, is accused of writing himself three checks from union funds in April, 1984. Chavez was secretary-treasurer for 20 years. He did not seek reelection in November, 1984. His federal indictment falls under provisions of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, which sets safeguards for administration of union funds.
