The Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed running back Jairo Penaranda, who was waived by the Eagles last summer, the National Football League team announced.

Penaranda, 27, takes the roster spot made available Tuesday when quarterback Jeff Christensen was put on waivers, the Eagles said Wednesday.

Penaranda, who signed with the Eagles last May, originally was a 12th-round draft choice of the Rams in 1981.

He later played for the Arizona Wranglers and the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League and was given a trial by the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. He joined the Eagles’ training camp this summer but was waived Aug. 13.

Penaranda is 6 feet tall and weighs 218 pounds. He played college ball at UCLA, where he was primarily a blocking back.

Christensen, 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, was cut by the Eagles during preseason camp. The Eagles signed him as a backup after starting quarterback Ron Jaworski injured his shoulder Nov. 17 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

A 1983 fifth-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, Christensen was traded to the Rams on July 25, 1984, and was waived by the team Aug. 16.
