A helicopter operated by the group that is airlifting goats off San Clemente Island developed engine trouble 10 miles east of the U.S. Navy property but made a safe emergency landing on the island’s south end, said Chief Petty Officer Ruth Lawrence. The pilot, Milton Cain, and his two passengers were not injured, she said. Cain broadcast a Mayday signal as the crew was flying to the island as part of the Fund for Animals’ mission to remove wild goats from the Navy property, Lawrence said. A U.S Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched after the distress call, but the pilot of the disabled aircraft had landed safely before the rescue craft arrived, Lawrence said.
