Japan’s Example

Share

Thanks for printing David Smollar’s articles (Nov. 11) on “Quake Experts Take a Lesson.” Now I realize how the State of California and the utility companies have left most of us in the dark regarding earthquake preparedness.

It’s good to hear how the Japanese are protecting their homes and offices from quake disasters. We could use them as a model.

Why doesn’t the General Telephone Co. publicize, statewide, the safety measures it asks its employees to exercise at home and at work? Safety measures could be (1) posted in public areas like post offices and libraries, or (2) included in fliers along with monthly utility statements.

Even newspapers could publish them or provide addresses of where to obtain this information.

We can’t wait for another disaster to start preparing for the danger. We must follow Japan’s example and make more Californians aware of ways to protect ourselves, our nuclear plants, our businesses and our homes from a major earthquake.
