An 18-year-old man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting during a card game Sunday in Sun Valley, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

A quarter-mile stretch of the Golden State Freeway was closed briefly in an unsuccessful search for the suspect.

Police identified the dead man as Ezekiel Jaquez, whose address was unknown. He died from a bullet wound in the chest, Sgt. Ray Davies said.

Apolonio Villareal, 26, was hospitalized in stable condition with an arm wound, Davies said.

Police said the shooting apparently followed an argument over the card game at about 5 a.m. in a house in the 8200 block of De Garmo Avenue.

Two officers later saw a man resembling the suspect near the Sunland Boulevard exit of the freeway and chased him into a brushy area adjacent to the southbound lanes, Lt. Ken Small said.

Police cordoned off a two-square-block area along the freeway at about 11 a.m. and brought in a search dog and two helicopters. The California Highway Patrol closed the southbound lanes for 15 minutes because the suspect was believed to be armed with a pistol, police said.
