Craig MacTavish snapped a 2-2 tie with three consecutive second-period goals and the Edmonton Oilers scored on four of six power plays Sunday night to defeat the Calgary Flames, 5-3, at Edmonton.

MacTavish, who missed last season while serving a one-year jail sentence for vehicular homicide, scored his 8th, 9th and 10th goals in a seven-minute span.

His final two were power-play goals, and the dramatic difference on power plays was a major factor in the outcome. Calgary came up empty on 10 power plays.

“It was one of those nights,” MacTavish said. “The puck was bouncing and following me around all night. You just lay back and enjoy it.”

Mark Messier and Mark Napier also scored for Edmonton, while Wayne Gretzky settled for one assist. Andy Moog stopped 38 of 41 shots in goal.

“There were three things tonight,” Calgary Coach Bob Johnson said. “They got good goaltending, our power play let us down and our penalty killing didn’t do the job.

“If we had executed on our power play and stopped theirs, we’d be going home with two points.”

Boston 4, New Jersey 2--Dave Reid scored two goals and set up another in a six-minute burst in the second period to lead the Bruins at Boston.

Rick Middleton and Randy Burridge also scored for Boston on the 61st anniversary of the Bruins’ NHL debut.

Boston, blanked by Quebec 3-0 and 2-0 in consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1969, broke the scoreless streak after New Jersey had taken a 2-0 lead.

Winnipeg 2, Philadelphia 1--Doug Smail scored the tie-breaking goal and added an assist and goalie Dan Bouchard stopped 38 shots at Winnipeg as the Jets snapped a five-game losing streak and ended the Flyers’ three-game winning streak.

Philadelphia pulled goalie Bob Froese, who made 31 saves, for an extra attacker in the final minute but failed to get the tying goal.
