Public Meeting Today on Westdome Proposal

Share

The Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce will host a public meeting today titled “Facts and Fallacies” about the proposed Westdome Arena.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the Spurgeon Room of the Santa Ana Public Library, 26 Civic Center Drive. City officials and representatives of the four-man Westdome partnership will be there for the discussion.

The partners, Allan Durkovic, Robert Osbrink, Donald Oliphant and Ronald McMahon, hope to build an 18,500-seat arena at the southwest corner of Flower Street and Civic Center Drive, current site of Santa Ana Stadium. Under their proposal, the city would raze the stadium, which is used by high school and college football teams, and build a replacement facility at another, unselected site.

A draft of an environmental-impact report on the project is due this week, and final public hearings will be held in February or March. The $35-million arena is to be financed with industrial development bonds, a plan that won state approval last week.

A citizens’ group, Save Our Stadium, has collected more than 5,000 signatures on petitions opposing destruction of Santa Ana Stadium.
