Interstate 710

Share

The making of an interstate highway is no small accomplishment, as your article on the Long Beach Freeway’s recent elevation to national status so aptly pointed out. The long road to getting a freeway designated for much-coveted federal funds is full of potential dead-ends and wrong turns.

State Route 7 is now U.S. Interstate 710 thanks to the vision and perseverance of Rep. Glenn Anderson (D-Harbor City). His authorship of HR 4957 allows states to use federal rehabilitation funds on this type of highway, and his persuasive efforts helped convince the Federal Highway Administration to change the freeway’s status.

In the near future, the drivers that use the freeway daily--more than 175,000--will appreciate his hard work, as badly deteriorated sections of the freeway are repaired.
