A 23-year-old Spanish-speaking construction worker from Hollywood on Monday became the 11th $2-million winner in the California Lottery’s “Big Spin.”

Julio Morales said through an interpreter on the taped broadcast that he plans to use the money to help his family and buy a house.

There were nine $100,000 winners Monday--the most ever in one show.

They included Mardiros Markarian of Montebello, a 22-year-old civil engineering student who came to the United States from Beirut, Lebanon, two years ago. He said he hoped to use much of his money to transfer from East Los Angeles College to USC.

Norman Hopwood, 48, of San Leandro won $100,000 after his ball slipped out of the $2-million slot. Hopwood said he plans to set up a beagle-raising business.

Two other $100,000 winners were Martha Wathen, 24, a supermarket checker from San Carlos, who said she will donate part of her winnings to research for diabetes and acquired immune deficiency syndrome; and Pamela Griffin, 29, a company administrator from Los Angeles, who said she will help her terminally ill father.

Also winning $100,000 were Guillermo Caceres, 42, a cabin serviceman for United Airlines, and Oliver Neal, 44, a mail carrier. Both are Los Angeles residents.

The other three $100,000 winners were Karin Buchter, 25, an aspiring singer from Fresno; Joseph Rodriguez, 30, a mechanic for the National Guard who lives in National City, near San Diego; and Russell McIntire, 27, a security guard from Blue Jay in the San Bernardino Mountains.
