San Quentin prison inmates have given a check for $1,655 to the Mexican earthquake relief effort. Prisoners contributed to the fund during the last month at the suggestion of chaplain Dennis McMannus, according to San Quentin administrative assistant Dave Langerman. The check was given to the American Red Cross Marin chapter president, Hank Ingerson, who passed it on to the Mexican Earthquake Relief Fund. The quake hit Mexico City on Sept. 19 and killed thousands. Many inmates in the prison work as janitors, clerks and in furniture manufacturing, earning an average of $19 a month, Langerman said.
