Wilmington : Recommendations Adopted

A city-appointed committee of residents has adopted a set of land-use recommendations for Wilmington and Harbor City.

The recommendations--to be used in devising a broader “community plan” that also will include suggestions on such issues as school facilities and traffic circulation--are the first step in a lengthy process to revise zoning and make other planning improvements in parts of the two communities.

The land-use proposals, adopted last week, have gone to the Los Angeles Planning Department for review. The department will use the suggestions in devising a preliminary plan that will be presented at public workshops that are expected to be held late next year.

After community response is used to help revise the preliminary plan, public hearings are expected to be held in October, 1987, before the Los Angeles Planning Commission. In late 1987, a revised community plan is expected to be considered by the City Council’s Planning and Environment Committee. The entire community plan is expected to be approved by the City Council before February, 1988.

While the community plan remains under study, a public meeting will be held Jan. 14 to consider proposals for a moratorium on high-density apartment development in Wilmington and Harbor City. If such a measure is endorsed by Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, it could take effect as early as March, a Flores aide said.
