A strange interlude in the Rams’ strange season apparently was resolved Wednesday when Coach John Robinson decided to stick with quarterback Dieter Brock for at least one more game and to suspend AWOL wide receiver Bobby Duckworth for one game.

Duckworth also was fined and tested for drugs Wednesday, but the results weren’t immediately available. The Rams tested him when he joined the team after being acquired in a trade with the Chargers early this season, and that test was negative.

Robinson issued the following statement on the quarterback situation: “We evaluated what gives us the best chance to win (against the 49ers in San Francisco Monday night), and we feel Dieter Brock can do that.”

The announcement was made a day early. Robinson had said Monday: “Thursday, we’ll have an announcement about the quarterback position.”

Backup quarterback Jeff Kemp said he never heard directly from Robinson. “No one’s said anything to me,” he said.

Robinson also issued a statement concerning Duckworth, who missed the team plane to New Orleans last Saturday and wasn’t found until late Sunday when contacted in San Diego.

“He is suspended for this game, without pay, and he’s been fined an additional undisclosed amount,” Robinson said. “He will continue to practice with the team.”

Duckworth also issued a statement, apologizing to the coaches, his teammates and Ram fans.

The National Football League will permit the Rams to activate another player during Duckworth’s suspension.
