College Basketball Roundup : Fortier Finds Touch, Leads Huskies’ 70-66 Win at Reno

Paul Fortier, held in check in the first half, scored nine straight points during a four-minute span of the second half at Reno Thursday night to rally Washington to a 70-66 victory over winless Nevada Reno.

Fortier brought an 18-point average into the game but scored only 2 points in the first half. Chris Welp matched Fortier with 18 points for the Huskies (3-2).

Fortier’s nine-point spree put Washington ahead, 63-54, with 4:17 left. The Wolf Pack (0-5) closed within two points, 68-66, on a jumper by David Wood with 13 seconds left, but Welp added two free throws to seal the victory.

California 87, Hawaii 71--Leonard Taylor scored 26 points as the Bears recovered from a slow start to turn back the Rainbow Warriors at Berkeley.

Hawaii (3-2) jumped to a 14-2 lead in the first six minutes, but Cal (3-1) caught up at 22-22 on Taylor’s jump shot and pulled away to a 42-29 halftime lead.

Maryland 77, William & Mary 48--Len Bias scored 20 points in 29 minutes, and the Terrapins won for the fourth time in five games by trouncing the Indians at College Park, Md.

Ohio State 91, Akron 73--Dennis Hopson scored 27 points, and Brad Sellers had 20 points and 16 rebounds as the Buckeyes eased pass the Zips at Columbus, Ohio, for their fourth victory without a loss.

Arkansas 72, Samford 51--Scott Rose had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Razorboacks to their fifth victory without a defeat in a rout of the Bulldogs at Fayetteville, Ark.

Purdue 81, Morehead State 71--Sophomore guard Troy Lewis scored a game-high 21 points, 14 in the first half at West Lafayette, Ind., as the Boilermakers ran their record to 5-1.
