But for a baboon’s bark, Lee Trevino might have had the first-round lead to himself Thursday in the Million Dollar Golf Challenge at Sun City, South Africa.

The baboon cry at the top of Trevino’s backswing on the short 16th hole caused him to hook into the gallery and finish the hole with a par on the way to a three-under-par 69 and a tie with West German Bernhard Langer.

T.C. Chen of Taiwan and Denis Watson of South Africa were tied for third at 75.

In the first year of the women’s $125,000 competition, Patti Rizzo shot a par 72 for a three-stroke lead over Muffin Spencer-Devlin.

Ken Green and Sally Quinlan talked and shot their way to a seven-under-par 65 and a one-stroke lead over five other teams in the first round of the $600,000 Mixed Team event at Largo, Fla.

“I needed a partner here and I asked Donna White to recommend someone who liked to talk,” said Green. “Donna mentioned ‘Big-Mouth Sally’ to me, and we met for the first time on Monday. I basically like to talk a lot out on the course to get rid of the jitters.”
