A Mexican man was sentenced Friday to nearly 10 years in state prison for the attempted murder of a Border Crimes Prevention Unit agent and conspiring to rob aliens at they crossed the Mexican border at San Ysidro.

Jaime Arroyo Zaragoza, 23, was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison by Superior Court Judge Wesley B. Buttermore, who also ordered that Zaragoza be deported upon completion of his term.

Arroyo’s 33-year-old brother, Julio, was killed in a May 4 gunfight that ensued after border agents approached the brothers about one-quarter-mile east of the San Ysidro border crossing. A third man escaped into Mexico.

The case drew attention when Mexican coroners, disagreeing with a ruling by the San Diego County coroner, said the elder Arroyo was killed by a bullet fired at close range. The .9-millimeter bullet was fired from the gun of officer Cesar Solis.
