Two Utah men, convicted of kidnaping and killing a North Hollywood man last year, Friday were given maximum 25 years-to-life sentences in Van Nuys Superior Court.

Dennis George Rollins and Clayton Lefevre, both 18, were convicted in August of first-degree murder and other charges stemming from the shooting of Gary Schulman while Schulman’s hands were bound behind him in the foothills above Glendale on Aug. 21, 1984.

Rollins, who was the trigger man, was given two additional years on his sentence for using a gun. Lefevre was given one additional year for being involved in a crime in which a gun was used.

Rollins testified during the trial that he fired the shots that killed Schulman but only intended to scare him.

Both defendants were also sentenced to life in prison for kidnaping for the purpose of robbery, three years for robbery and two years for driving a car without the owner’s consent. All terms will run concurrently.

Judge Richard G. Kolostian ordered the two, who were 17 at the time of the crime, to be held at a California Youth Authority institution until they turn 25. After that, they are to be transferred to state prison to serve the rest of their sentences.

The men will be eligible for parole in 12 years. Lawyers for both defendants said they will appeal the convictions.
