U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David P. McDonald named Edwin S. Jones to run the St. Louis Globe-Democrat in place of its owner, who ceased publishing the newspaper Friday. Jones is the former chairman of First National Bank of St. Louis and First Union Bancorporation. The judge’s action came in response to a petition filed by 14 former Globe-Democrat employees, the St. Louis local of the Newspaper Guild and a group of investors interested in buying the paper. Witnesses testified last week that the newspaper’s employees had not been paid for at least a month and that the paper had lost more than $3 million in the past 18 months.
