Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III “should be impeached” if he fails to seek an independent inquiry into allegations that Administration lawyers lied to Congress and a federal court in withholding Environmental Protection Agency files in 1983, former EPA chief Anne McGill Burford said. “They ought to just bomb the Justice Department” if Meese declines a request from the House Judiciary Committee for a Watergate-style prosecutor to explore questions raised by a 2 1/2-year committee investigation, Burford said in an interview. The committee last week adopted the 1,300-page report, which suggests Justice Department lawyers were aware that EPA files contained evidence of wrongdoing when they were withheld from Congress on grounds of “executive privilege.”
