A San Diego Police Department task force has made 104 drug arrests since Nov. 25 in a crackdown on the sale of narcotics on city streets, Chief Bill Kolender announced at a press conference Monday.

The 20-member task force was created in response to pressure from residents, school administrators and parents in Southeast San Diego and Logan Heights, according to Bill Robinson, police spokesman.

Of the 104 people arrested, 79 were adults, and 25 of those were on probation for previous crimes, Robinson said. The task force also arrested 25 juveniles, 18 of whom were on probation. Robinson added that 26 of those arrested were known to be gang members.

The crackdown involved a cooperative effort between detectives from the narcotics division and gang detail, Robinson said. Kolender said that in some cases the sellers had to obtain permission from street gangs before they could sell the drugs in the gangs’ territory.

Robinson said narcotics detectives working in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego have noticed a decline in drug trafficking since the task force was formed.

Robinson said that of 25 search warrants issued because of the task force, 17 have been served on suspected traffickers.
