College Basketball Roundup : Maryland Slips West Virginia on Derrick Lewis’ Free Throws

Derrick Lewis sank two free throws with 16 seconds left Wednesday night, and Maryland escaped with a 42-41 victory over West Virginia at Morgantown, W. Va.

Dale Blaney’s desperation shot at the buzzer bounced off the front rim.

Len Bias scored 16 points for the Terrapins (5-2), who broke away from a 27-27 halftime tie and held off a rally by the Mountaineers (3-4).

West Virginia’s Vernon Odom broke a 40-40 tie with a free throw with 54 seconds left but missed his second attempt.

Georgetown 76 New Mexico 51--David Wingate scored 21 points and Reggie Williams added 14 to power the fifth-ranked Hoyas past the Lobos at Landover, Md.

The victory was Georgetown’s 34th in a row against teams outside of the Big East Conference in a streak dating back to December, 1983.

The Hoyas (5-0) scored 10 straight points during a three-minute stretch in the second half to pull away from the Lobos (1-5) at 53-39.

St. John’s 62, Marist 48--Walter Berry scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the 14th-round Redmen eased past the Red Foxes at New York for their seventh victory in eight games.

San Jose State 68, USF 61--The Dons lost the game and both starting guards to injury against the Spartans at San Francisco.

Rodney Tention broke his left elbow on a slam dunk near the end of the half and Robbie Trigsby sprained his ankle shortly after the intermission and did not play again.

Ward Farris scored 14 points and Ricky Berry added 12 for the Spartans (4-1). Freshman Mark McCathrion had 17 points for the Dons (4-2), who lost to San Jose for the second time in eight days.

Texas 82, Oral Roberts 66--John Brownlee collected 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Longhorns turned back the Titans at Austin, Tex.

Patrick Fairs had 19 points for Texas (3-2) and Woody Jones scored 14 for Oral Roberts (3-3).

Colorado 78, Colorado State 65--Mike Reid had 19 points and eight assists to lead the Buffaloes to a victory over the Rams at Boulder, Colo.

Randy Downs scored 15 points for the Buffaloes (6-1). Pat Durham had 15 for the Rams (4-3).
