Grand Prix Greats

Your Dec. 5 piece on (Stirling) Moss, (Innes) Ireland, (Phil) Hill and (Dan) Gurney at Palm Springs was one of the finest pieces on racing I’ve ever read. It was suffused with understanding and all the romance and wit of these four intelligences who just happened to be so fast in the next thing to cloth helmets. Your piece called up memories of the first races I attended--1959 Sebring 12 hours; a 1959 U. S. Grand Prix Sebring; and later pilgrimages to Watkins Glen in 1968 and the first Long Beach Prix.
