San Diego County Sheriff John Duffy, concerned over Roger Hedgecock’s safety, said the former San Diego mayor would be isolated from other prisoners at the county jail if and when he is imprisoned for his felony conviction. Duffy told a news conference that Hedgecock likely would be held in a larger-than-normal single cell away from other inmates. Superior Court Judge William L. Todd Jr. imposed a one-year sentence of local custody on Hedgecock. He is now free on his own recognizance pending the outcome of an appeal of his 13-count conspiracy and perjury conviction. Duffy said he became concerned for Hedgecock’s safety when, shortly after he was sentenced, inmates at the County Jail began chanting, “We want Roger! We want Roger!”
