Tennis Roundup : Kriek Upset by Schultz in Australia

Bud Schultz, who has risen from 350th in the world rankings to No. 46 in only 14 months, upset top-seeded Johann Kriek, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6, Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $145,000 New South Wales Open tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia.

Kriek was not the only upset victim. No. 6-seeded Sammy Giammalva, a finalist last year; No. 3-seeded Scott Davis, and No. 8-seeded John Fitzgerald, the defending champion, also were ousted. Giammalva was beaten by Christo Steyn of South Africa, 6-3, 6-3, Davis fell to Australia’s Wally Masur, 6-4, 6-1, and Fitzgerald lost to American Mark Dickson, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, after having match point.

Henri Leconte of France assured himself a berth in the Masters in New York next month with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Johnathon Canter.

At Tokyo, top-seeded Claudia Khode-Kilsch of West Germany treated herself to a belated birthday present Thursday by advancing to the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Pan Pacific Women’s Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alycia Moulton.

Khode-Kilsch was 22 Wednesday.

Defending champion Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, seeded No. 2, defeated Marcella Mesker of the Netherlands, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
