College Basketball Roundup : DePaul Does an Inside Job on Houston

No. 19-ranked DePaul used its strength inside to score an 84-78 victory over Houston Thursday night at Houston and remain undefeated.

“Our game plan was to go inside, and I think we did a good job,” Blue Demon Coach Joey Meyer said. “We have a lot of big people and we used them well tonight.”

Lamone Lampley scored 19, and Dallas Comegys added 18 for DePaul (5-0). Guard Alvin Franklin scored 25 for Houston (3-2).

DePaul led at halftime, 47-39.

Michigan 82, Central Michigan 61--Senior Richard Rellford scored 17 points to pace the No. 2-ranked Wolverines at Ann Arbor, Mich.

With the victory, Michigan raised its record to 8-0 and extended its regular-season winning streak to 24 games. Central Michigan fell to 1-5.

Antoine Joubert scored 14 points for Michigan, and Gary Grant added 10. Junior Jim Murray scored 19, and Ervin Leavy contributed 15 to lead Central Michigan.

Wisconsin 76, Northern Illinois 67--At Madison, Wis., Rick Olson scored 25 points in leading the undefeated Badgers to their eighth consecutive win. The 8-0 start is the best for a Badger team since the 1919-20 season.

Northern Arizona 77, Arizona State 67--Forward Andre Spencer scored a game- and career-high 31 points to lead the Lumberjacks (4-2) at Flagstaff, Ariz. The Sun Devils are 5-1.

Forward Chris Sandle paced the Sun Devils with 19 points. The Lumberjacks’ David Duane was the game’s high rebounder with 11.

Arizona 72, San Diego State 66--John Edgar equaled his career high of 21 points, and Joe Turner added 15 to lead Arizona at Tucson.

The Aztecs (0-5) led at halftime, 35-31. Arizona is 4-3.

Josh Lowery and Creon Dorsey each scored 18 points for the Aztecs.

Nebraska 79, Washington State 72--Dave Hoppen scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Nebraska at Pullman, Wash.

Nebraska (5-1) held a 37-31 lead at halftime and opened a lead of 14 points with five straight baskets early in the second half.

Keith Morrison scored 20 points and had 8 rebounds to lead the Cougars (4-3).

Texas El Paso 53, New Mexico State 52--Forward Quintan Gates hit a 15-foot jumper with nine seconds remaining to lift Texas El Paso to a come-from-behind victory at Las Cruces, N.M.

The winning basket by Gates, a 6-7 junior, enabled the Miners to improve to 6-1. New Mexico State is 3-2.

Dave Feitl led the Miners with 17 points, and Gates added 10. Gilbert Wilburn led New Mexico State with 15 points.

Stephen F. Austin 71, Oklahoma State 66--Kevin Hurley had 24 points, including an 18-foot midway through the second half that gave Stephen F. Austin the lead for good, to pace the Lumberjacks (7-2) at Stillwater, Okla. Muhammed Akbar had 28 points for the Cowboys (5-1).

South Carolina 81, Augusta College 51--At Columbia, S.C., freshman forward Terry Dozier scored a game-high 22 points to lead South Carolina (4-4).

Oregon State 60, Boise State 58 (OT)--Darryl Flowers sank a jumper from the corner for the go-ahead basket with 1 1/2 minutes left in overtime, and Oregon State (1-3) held on for the win over the Broncos (2-4) at Corvallis, Ore.

Darrin Houston hit 9 of 12 shots, most of from long range, and led the Beavers with 20 points.
