The Washington Redskins have signed 11-year veteran Steve Bartkowski as their third-string quarterback for the rest of the season.

Team officials made the move after starting quarterback Jay Schroeder suffered a hairline rib fracture against Philadelphia last weekend. Schroeder has missed some practice this week heading into Sunday’s game with the Cincinnati Bengals at RFK Stadium. Second-year quarterback Babe Laufenberg remains the club’s first backup.

Bartkowski, 33, was waived Nov. 27 by the Atlanta Falcons. He was Atlanta’s starter through the first five games of the season before an injury to his right knee sidelined him. He was placed on injured reserve three games later and was eventually released.
