Eastward Move Set by Conservationists

SAN FRANCISCO —
Friends of the Earth have announced plans to move to Washington as early as next month in order to be closer to the environmental group’s primary sources of support.
The organization’s board of directors approved the move on an 8-7 vote recently despite protests by David Brower, who founded the group in 1969 in San Francisco.
“This area (San Francisco) is the incubator for the conservation movement in this country,” said Brower, 73. About a third of the group’s 30,000 members live in the Bay Area.
