A Superior Court judge dismissed charges that a Los Angeles police officer helped another officer assault two auto theft suspects. Narcotics investigator Alejandro Rosales was charged with having helped fellow investigator Dixon Tew beat up two men Tew suspected of having stolen his truck in September, 1984, but Judge Nancy Brown dismissed the case after hearing only the prosecution’s evidence, saying it was legally insufficient to support the charge. Tew pleaded guilty Sept. 18 to assault under color of authority against the two suspects. He was placed on three years’ probation, and the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor to allow him to remain a police officer.
