A man suspected of gunning down a Los Angeles police detective apparently attempted suicide by suffocation, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said Thursday.

Daniel S. Jenkins, 30, was found in his cell just before midnight on Dec. 7 with a plastic bag tied over his head, Deputy Rick Adams said.

The accused murderer was still breathing, and deputies rushed him to the jail infirmary, where he was kept under observation for five days, Adams said.

Jenkins, who has been able to make court appearances, is accused of killing Detective Thomas C. Williams, 42, on Halloween. The officer was cut down in a fusillade of bullets from a semiautomatic weapon as he picked up his 6-year-old son from a Canoga Park church school

Police believe Jenkins sought revenge against Williams after the detective testified against him in a robbery trial.
