County : Malls Paying Bus Fares for Christmas Shoppers
In a blend of shopping and giving, four malls are underwriting free rides for passengers on 10 routes of the Orange County Transportation District from today through Christmas Eve, OCTD spokeswoman Joanne Curran announced Friday.
OCTD workers and helpers strung lights, bows and garlands on the free buses Friday at the district’s facility in Garden Grove.
Curran said most of the routes involved run near or right by the shopping centers sponsoring the promotion--the Buena Park Mall, Los Cerritos Center, Newport Center Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza.
Passengers “don’t have to worry about parking places around the malls, so that’s an attraction” to riders, Curran said, promising that after the decorations are in place, “the buses themselves will stand out quite a bit.”
The promotion, being done for the first time, will also feature drivers dressed as Santa Claus, Curran said.
