Sylmar Students Find Pins in Candy Treats

Students at a Sylmar elementary school, snacking Friday on candy bars that their teacher had given them, discovered metal pins in some of the candy, which had been purchased at a Simi Valley supermarket, Simi Valley police reported.

None of the fifth- and sixth-grade children was injured in the incident at Hubbard Street Elementary School, Los Angeles police Lt. Dennis Dunn said.

The teacher purchased the candy Thursday evening at a Vons supermarket in the 2200 block of Tapo Street, Simi Valley police Lt. Bob Klamser said. After the incident was reported, employees at the supermarket cleared all remaining bags of similar candy bars from store shelves. No more pins were discovered, Klamser said.

Dunn said police believe the tampered food is related to the strike by meat cutters.
