Andy North, the U.S. Open champion, and World Series of Golf champ Roger Maltbie are among the latest players added to the entry list for next month’s Spalding Invitational.
Nine women pros, who will get distance advantages off the tees, will compete in the event scheduled Jan. 2-5 on the Pebble Beach, Del Monte and Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club courses.
North and Maltbie both have made several previous appearances in the tournament, a non-tour event in its 14th year. The prize money, including that distributed in the pro-am competition, will be $200,000 this time.
Maltbie won the Westchester tournament this year as well as the World Series, and he was the tour’s eighth leading money winner, topping $360,000. A former Spalding champion, John Mahaffey, will open the new golfing year in the tournament again after collecting $341,000 to rank ninth on the PGA tour this season.
