An enterprising thief has managed to make off with 10 of Buena Park’s 2,200 solid-brass fire hydrants, and is probably using them for scrap and art materials, police said. The thief uses special wrenches to shut off the water, then removes the bolts and unscrews the top of the 60-pound hydrants from the plastic pipe below, city water supervisor Darrel Mays said. “For someone who knows what he’s doing, it takes less than five minutes,” Mays said. “He knows his stuff, no doubt about it.”
