Anne Baxter

I am going to miss Anne Baxter. As one her own age, I was always aware of her, first seeing her in “The Great Profile” (1940), then being amazed at her acting in “The Magnificent Ambersons” (1942), at the age of 18. As a French girl in both “The Pied Piper” (1942) and “Five Graves to Cairo” (1943), her accent was so right you would have sworn she was French.

Whenever I hear the tune “Mam’selle” from “The Razor’s Edge” (1946), the pitiable Sophie immediately comes to mind, her Academy Award triumph. Her distinctive silky-smooth voice as narrator of “Mother Wore Tights” (1947) helped make it one of the better Betty Grable films, and it was perfected in “All About Eve” (1950).

Finally, it is a pleasure to watch her maturely very attractive Mrs. Cabot in the current TV series “Hotel.” She added the chic and aristocratic touch to the series. There really was no one quite like her.
