Warmth of Christmas Sets a Record in L.A.; More Today

Share

It was beginning to look a lot like summer on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles--especially when the mercury peaked at 87 at the Civic Center, breaking by four degrees the record high for the date set back in 1950.

Tuesday’s reading made Los Angeles the hottest spot in the nation, the National Weather Service said. For purposes of comparison, it was 20 below zero at International Falls, Minn., the coldest reading of the day.

And to really get you into the spirit of the winter holiday, the Weather Service said it could be an even hotter record-breaker today, with readings near 90 possible.

The standard for Christmas Day in Los Angeles was 85, set in 1980.

All this has resulted from a persistent area of high pressure hovering over the western states that has been keeping any potentially inclement weather far to the north of us.

And forecasters said the stubborn high is showing little signs of vacating.

There will be a few high clouds in the Southland skies today, along with a little fog near the coast and gusty winds up to 25 m.p.h. below the canyons.

Some relief may be in sight Thursday, however, when readings only in the mid 80s are expected.
