UC Irvine’s Tod Murphy Suffering From Rib Bruise

UC Irvine senior forward Tod Murphy is suffering from what has been diagnosed as badly bruised ribs, but will play when the Anteaters meet Loyola Marymount in the first round of the Nevada Reno Tournament Friday night in Reno’s Lawlor Events Center, UCI trainer Paul Gardikas said Tuesday.

Murphy, the Anteaters’ leading scorer, was in considerable pain after Monday night’s 69-63 loss to Oral Roberts in Crawford Hall. X-rays taken after the game were negative. Murphy missed practice Tuesday and will not practice this week, Gardikas said. He will play with a flak jacket against Loyola.

Murphy was injured in UCI’s 122-100 loss to Loyola on Dec. 18, and aggravated the injury when he was hit with the elbow of an Oral Roberts player.

“It wasn’t a cheap elbow,” Murphy said. “He was just blocking out.”
